Happy Wednesday y’all!
I’ve been swimming through a super full plate over the past two weeks, so Seven Bops has taken me longer to curate than it usually does. I’m back with a juicy one today though. Last Saturday I was in the car with my partner — whose playlists are always bananas — and Tony! Toni! Toné!’s Anniversary starting playing in the background while we cracked jokes on the way home.
About 5 minutes in, I paused mid-convo, seduced by Raphael Saadiq’s whisper of a voice singing…
First of all, I’m a young soul man.
Second of all, I’m your man.
…and I asked — “Wait, what song is this?…Is this still Anniversary?…Is this a whole hidden record back here?!” And at the tender age of 39, I heard the full 9:23 joint for the first time.
The strings? The horns? The bass? The harmonies? The deconstruction and build up? *melts* I’m still in awe.
Needless to say, this week’s set starts off with the (soon-to-be) 30 year old classic and is accompanied by some of my favorite songs I’ve been listening to so far this month.
Here’s the full tracklist:
Tony! Toni! Toné! - Anniversary
Kenyon Dixon - Lucky
Terrace Martin feat. James Fauntleroy & Elena Pinderhughes - Too Late
Jordan Hawkins & DUCKWRTH - Can’t Fake What You Feel
IDK feat. Tay Iwar - Elmina
Mick Jenkins feat. JID - Smoke Break-Dance
Matt Quentin - Morning Dew
Listen on Apple Music or Spotify.
Sending love and wishing you all a smooth and easy finish to the week,
HMKM
P.S. What are y’all listening to this week? In lieu of our normal weekly Wednesday submissions thread, meet me in the comments section of this post and share what music is moving you right now. Shout out to Jim in Milton Keynes, UK and Dorothy in the San Francisco Bay Area for the submissions the last go ‘round!
Seven Bops is a community sourced playlist curated to move you through the week. Every Wednesday I create a thread for submissions. From the bops you all submit and what I’m currently listening to, I’ll curate a set of seven songs to share with you every Sunday.
